I've always had a pretty frequent and strong inner voice. I've learned to somewhat silence it when I read Chase Hughes's book Tongue. I find that having it active makes it harder to pay attention to people, empathize and learn new material, so I often have to exert myself to turn it off. It takes a lot of mental energy, so even though it tends to reactivate quickly, it's easier to relax when it is silenced. I think the inner voice can be useful when it metabolizes new information but unchecked it tends to eat its own feces so to speak and accomplish nothing while expending a lot of energy. My family has a pretty long history of both mental illness and anti-social criminal behavior, though we are generally pretty intelligent.
