"There’s a few others I could name like Anatoly Karlin, Steven Pinker, or the DEEP LEFT, but calling these people left wing feels like a bit of a reach."

Excellent troll. DLA is now going to write a 24,000-word article digressing on Byzantine theatre and Aztec agronomy to prove that he is a real Leftist.

Listen buddy, the article is only 2,400 words, you are off by a factor of 10. I will not stand for this.

My favorite leftist is Scott Alexander.

I’ll put him in the reach category.

If those are the left wing posters that aren't horrible, I don't even want to imagine the ones that are horrible

they are centrumliberals, for me leftism is left-anarchism, which means James C. Scott, which means Seeing Like A State, and feel free to read that book, you will like it. And then Weapons Of The Weak.

I would add Ezra Klein and Nate Silver to the Smith/Yglesias space. RWers might be tempted to totally dismiss Klein because he randomly chimped out at Sam Harris that one time, but he's generally excellent. Also Sam Harris, now that I mention him.

Ogre's avatar

come on I hoped it was discussing leftism, now people just mention the most center centrists ever

I generally believe in reading the other side of issues. I've been working my way through far left books on political psychology. I generally agree on the choices, Ritchie, Paige-Harden, Gusev, and you forgot Turkheimer (and the late Flynn), these are all capable researchers who produced many good works. This isn't true for the likes of Kevin Bird and his other Antifa-stalker friends.

Bentham's Bulldog is another I recommend to righties.

He's young (younger than me, even) so he has some time to improve, but I find him unimpressive tbh. Autistically obsessed with morality and rationality. Needs to ascend to the mental stage of relativism or post-rationalism.

Zero Contradictions's avatar

What is your definition of "rationality"? It's a very loaded term.

another centrumliberal, not left

Destiny doesn't come up with novel arguments so I don't think there's any educational value from listening to him, just the entertainment value of hearing a witty guy talk fast. I think Pinker identifies as a centrist but I'm not sure. Because left-vs-right are shifting coalitions (protectionism wasn't part of the right-wing 10 years ago, a majority of Democrats now support free trade), I predict that as time progresses, even if my professed views remain the same, the way in which people identify my views will shift further toward the left and away from the right. I am living in 2035. I'm predicting a major party shift that started in 2015, akin to the Goldwater primary, which will take at least 10-20 years to fully play out.

He doesn't, but he has quite a broad base of knowledge. Most of his value comes from aggregating a lot of arguments and being entertaining.

For a high IQ white gamer guy who's covered politics for years he knows surprisingly little geography and history:

Race communism is not RW, lol.

Most of these are more centrist imo, but maybe the Overton window is moving right.

Ogre's avatar

yes. where is a decent anarchist here?

Idatus's avatar

Almost none of these people are left-wing which shows the self-congratulatory mental circle jirk this post is.

Ogre's avatar

Eww, these people are centrumliberals, not left. Pinker as left? Come on. Centrumliberal. Except for Freddie.

Zizek, seriously? he is an entertainer clown making zero sense.

Gimme someone who takes the James C. Scott kind of left-anarchism seriously

JaziTricks's avatar

I've sometime felt Sasha to be kinda dishonest when arguing against heritability.

his "deep inside knowledge" always felt to me the dishonest way to promote the false leftist narrative.

am I wrong?

Emil O. W. Kirkegaard's avatar

It's hard to say! He doesn't give off any particular ideological vibes (most of the LW critics are socialists), or some kind of anxiety (internalizing) issues (unlike Paige-Harden and Turkheimer). Flynn also came from socialism, but reading his writings, it is clear his main thing was always a strong sense of justice (Rawlsian perhaps). Maybe Gusev is just a weird guy who somehow acquired a distaste for something.
